How to choose the right drive axle for my forklift?
Choose the Forklift Drive Axle That Fits Your 5 Ton Forklift
The forklift's drive axle serves as the critical link between the transmission and the wheels. For a 5-ton forklift, selecting the right axle comes down to checking the torque and load, selecting the appropriate brake configuration, and inspecting the mechanical components to ensure the safety and performance of your machine.
Main functions of the drive axle of a 5-ton forklift
The primary function of a loader's drive axle is to reduce the speed transmitted by the transmission while simultaneously increasing torque through the main drive and final drives. This process ensures the necessary travel speed and traction for heavy-duty work. Additionally, the differential maintains a speed differential between the left and right tires, allowing the loader to move smoothly even when ground resistance varies on each side.
Our 5-ton forklift axle utilizes a robust, two-stage gearbox design. This includes a Gleason spiral bevel primary gearbox and an NGW planetary gearbox at the wheel end. The axle housing is precision-cast from cast steel, ensuring superior structural integrity and dimensional accuracy compared to standard welding methods.
Main technical characteristics to check
When comparing a forklift drive axle, you should start by checking the key specifications against industry standards for the 5-ton class:

Drive axle of a 5-ton loader |
General transmissiontransmission number |
22.85 |
Maximum torquemoment forat the entrance |
5100 N m |
Load on axis |
27,000 kg |
Pressure brake oils |

Ensuring your equipment meets the requirements of the 5-ton forklift series helps maintain consistent performance in typical working conditions.
Choosing a braking system to ensure safety
The standard drive axle of the 5-ton forklift is equipped with a disc caliper braking system designed to provide high braking torque and reliable operation in a variety of operating conditions. However, different operating conditions require different solutions.
For applications requiring more powerful and consistent braking, such as mining or rough terrain, we recommend using a loader axle with a wet brake. A wet brake axle seals the critical braking components within the axle housing, immersing them in cooling lubricant. This design ensures excellent heat dissipation, consistent, continuous braking, and completely eliminates sparks during braking.
Main parameters of the drive axle with wet brake:
Overall gear ratio: 22.853
Maximum input torque: 5100 Nm
Load per axle: 27,000 kg
Brake oil pressure: 10MPa
Braking torque: 26,000 Nm
Required brake oil: Hydraulic oil L-HL46
Product advantage
Beyond standard specifications, the forklift drive axle must be mechanically compatible with your forklift to ensure smooth operation. Our product information highlights the practical benefits for customers:
Several gear ratios are available to meet different performance requirements.
High transmission efficiency for reduced overall fuel consumption.
Universal connection sizes compatible with various brands of forklifts.
Optimized seal design results in oil leakage levels significantly below the industry average.
Use this quick checklist before ordering a loader drive axle:
1. Gear Ratio: Make sure the overall gear ratio is 22.85 for 5 ton class.
2.Torque: Check the maximum input torque of 5100Nm.
3.Axle load: Confirm the permissible load of 27,000kg per axle.
4.Brake Type: Choose caliper disc brake for standard needs or wet axle loader brake for higher braking torque (26,000 Nm).
5.Brake oil requirements (wet brake): Use L-HL46 hydraulic oil as specified in the instructions.
6.Interfaces: Specify connection dimensions and seal design when selecting a model.
